Job Summary

The Business Administrator, Academic Unit reports directly to the head of the unit and administers and oversees multiple strategic, tactical, and/or operational areas including, but not limited to, strategic planning, facilities, marketing, project management, information technology, and the unit budget for an academic unit; works closely on finance and human resources matters. This role leads these functions and/or supervises employees responsible for these areas; implements unit-wide projects including establishing and communicating the strategic mission and initiating and monitoring unit-specific initiatives; represents the unit within the university on committees and other strategic planning activities; develops and implements policies and procedures and recommends changes to improve performance specific to the unit’s mission.

Representative Duties

  • Oversee and direct the overall operations for an academic unit
  • Lead strategic planning process and contribute to the financial identification of strategic priorities
  • Oversee the administration and strategic planning of the work unit’s facilities, safety and security, and budgeting processes; act as a liaison for human resource matters including workforce planning
  • Lead project management activities in support of strategic goals
  • Provide oversight and direction for the unit’s risk management, safety and security programs while working closely with University Police
  • Collaborate in ensuring standards are met for compliance with university policies
  • Collaborate with Financial Officer to lead and coordinate budget development and prepare financial analyses for strategic planning
  • Work closely with Financial Officer and oversee, review, and approve general and restricted budget expenditure
  • Work closely with HR Strategic Partner to determine staffing needs and assist with the development of processes and procedures
  • Oversee strategic communications and marketing efforts for the assigned unit
  • Supervise and work closely with facilities manager to evaluate and make recommendations on space usage and facility planning
  • Ensure health standards and regulatory compliance for assigned area
  • Provide oversight and direction for information technology services
  • Oversee the development and implementation of disaster planning and risk management for academic area
  • Serve as the liaison between the unit and various University offices and officials
  • May have responsibilities over data analysis and reporting as well as organizational excellence for the unit
  • Direct, coach, supervise and evaluate all assigned staff

Level Summary:
– Demonstrates proficient ability in work design, project management, financial planning and development of goals for accomplishing unit assignments. Reviews and guides work to ensure conformity to policy and effective approaches. Evaluates employee performance and recommend development opportunities. Demonstrates ability to coach employees. Presents and communicates key university indicatives and connects it to unit contributions. Provides broad guidelines. Develops, evaluates, enhances, and/or implements quality improvement practices. Recommends innovative solutions.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
– Oversees a team (typically 4 or more; no fewer than 2) full
– time direct reports of individual contributors and/or first level supervisors.
Fiscal Responsibilities:
– Monitors and tracks department/area budget
– May plan, forecast, and/or assist in developing budgets
– May have final signature authority for specific area

– Encounters varied and complex problems
– Helps to develop creative and/or novel approaches to resolve problems that are difficult in nature but within limited scope

Salary Structure
  • Comp Grade – 13
  • Minimum – $86,300.00
  • MidPoint – $107,900.00
  • Maximum – $129,500.00

8+ years of relevant experience, including 3+ years of supervisory experience
