Job Summary

The Student Advocacy Manager oversees a team serving specialized student populations intended to promote and support academic success; engages in the planning, implementing, and assessing of all activities conducted within the unit; oversees the hiring, training, and supervision of both students and professional staff.

Representative Duties

  • Provide leadership and direction for an office, center, or unit that supports the academic, social, emotional, and engagement needs of specialized student populations; may include those external to the University
  • Design, implement, and evaluate initiatives and programs in alignment with the mission of the assigned center/program
  • Develop relationships with external entities including government agencies, corporations, and non-profits to cultivate and garner support for programming efforts
  • Hire, train, supervise, mentor and evaluate assigned professional staff
  • Develop and administer budget for assigned center/program
  • Prepare grant proposals and investigate other sources of funding
  • Complete and submit performance and financial status reports as required by funding sources and/or University policy
  • Develop and administer policies and procedures; direct strategic planning for the assigned center/program
  • Maintain records required by regulations, grant contract, and/or University policy
  • Facilitate the administration of federal grant programs including participant eligibility, federal reporting requirements, and budget management
  • Liaison with Student Affairs leaders, University staff, and/or other organizations across the University to establish and assess educational programs and information dissemination
  • Oversee the recruitment, enrollment, and retention strategies within a specific region
  • May lead and direct federally funded programs for community groups aimed at providing avenues for success, eliminating barriers, and preparing students for secondary education
  • May act as a liaison to secondary school officials
  • May advise and coordinate with student organizations in accordance with the mission of the assigned center/program
  • May provide crisis intervention and referrals as required

– Manages direct reports where primary duty is the management of a working unit.
Level Summary:
– Demonstrates proficient ability in work design, project management, financial planning and development of goals for accomplishing unit assignments. Reviews and guides work to ensure conformity to policy and effective approaches. Evaluates employee performance and recommend development opportunities. Demonstrates ability to coach employees. Presents and communicates key university indicatives and connects it to unit contributions. Provides broad guidelines. Develops, evaluates, enhances, and/or implements quality improvement practices. Recommends innovative solutions.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
– Oversees a team (typically 4 or more; no fewer than 2) full
– time direct reports of individual contributors and/or first level supervisors.
Fiscal Responsibilities:
– Monitors and tracks department/area budget
– May plan, forecast, and/or assist in developing budgets
– May have final signature authority for specific area
Problem Solving:
– Encounters varied and complex problems
– Helps to develop creative and/or novel approaches to resolve problems that are difficult in nature but within limited scope
– Modifies, adapts, or refines guidelines if necessary to resolve issues or problems
Independence of Action:
– Works independently on complex or strategic assignments
– Uses existing practices and advanced working knowledge to determine appropriate work methods for the team

  • Comp Grade – 11
  • Minimum – $68,200.00
  • MidPoint – $85,200.00
  • Maximum – $102,300.00
