Job Summary

Network Engineers implement, maintain, and evaluate network systems to include but not limited to WAN, LAN, firewall, and IP voice services; troubleshoot complex/escalated network issues; conducts network architecture planning, design, optimization, feasibility, and cost studies; research and analyze new technology, network traffic, potential security risks, etc.

Representative Duties

  • Develop plans, schedules, and requirements for deployment of networks
  • Design networks to meet the needs of the staff, faculty, students, and research projects at all University locations across the Commonwealth
  • Consult with University units on network planning, budgeting, equipment selection, and equipment configuration
  • Review and analyze building functions and occupancy to develop design requirements and project scope; estimate project costs
  • Document designs through drawings and specifications; initiate work orders to implement designs
  • Develop topology configurations following network best practices that meet the needs of the University Enterprise Network and its users
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of network security and authentication standards
  • Support other infrastructure staff with difficult configuration and troubleshooting challenges
  • Coordinate and monitor assigned work from scope development, design, implementation, and expenses through completion
  • Provide regular progress reports to stakeholders
  • Collaborate with the development of effective processes and procedures for design, work process, project management, and systems and facilities documentation
  • Manage vendor relationships; consult with vendors to resolve issues
  • Evaluate potential solutions, equipment, and components

Supervisory Responsibilities:
– Indirect supervisor for other full–time employees
– May serve as direct supervisor for part–time, student, and/or temporary workers, volunteers, or a full–time employee

– May validate and pay invoices
– Monitors and tracks budgets and funding

  • MidPoint – $95,900.00
  • Maximum – $115,100.00
