Job Summary and Representative Duties

Attorney - Law School oversee and direct student-focused clinical and experiential programs such as the Family Law Clinic, Entrepreneur Assistance Clinic, and Agricultural Mediation Program; merge theory and practice; facilitate and augment student learning via case review meetings and work product feedback; research, write, and public outreach in support of grants obtained by the clinic, faculty member, or the institute; collaboration across disciplines when an institute is housed within another college or business unit at the university.

  • Assign cases and tasks to certified legal interns and selected law school students; manage schedules and monitor case activity; meet regularly for case review and work product feedback; provide advice, direction, consultation, and assistance as students hone legal research, writing, oral advocacy, and critical thinking skills
  • Oversee client intake, interviews, assistance, and advice; facilitate third-party communications, negotiations, mediations, and settlements; monitor docketing and filing applications; review subject-matter research and assess case interpretation/application; affirm conflict of interest and referral determinations
  • Research current trends/issues in different types of law in support of educating the public and furthering the goals of a grant; write educational and other types of materials to obtain grants
  • Engage with stakeholders, clients, and the public in order to further the goals of a grant
  • Assist students with document, contract, and evidentiary reviews; help develop legal theory, case strategy, litigation/advocacy tactics
  • Provide feedback on legal writings including point papers, white papers, contracts, business plans, law review articles, transactional documents, pleadings, and briefs, etc.
  • Ensure students adhere to professional responsibilities of lawyers, ethic rules, and basic principles of law office administration, e.g., conflicts, client confidentiality, and time and expense recordkeeping
  • Develop policies, procedures, and programs related to clinic and program services; identify internal controls and provide mechanisms to monitor and enforce statutory and regulatory compliance
  • Remain current on case law and legislative developments; attend continuing legal education courses
