Job Summary

The Facilities Automation Specialist oversees specific functional duties and responsibilities associated with direct digital control in facilities construction, renovation, and maintenance, where specialized expertise is required. Functions include customer service activities, often related to commissioning, maintenance, or energy savings programs, and recommending methods of repair or upgrades of the Building Automation Systems (BAS) in facilities or infrastructures; provides customer liaison or contact point for BAS and control issues; designs, develops, and administers various programs and systems; analyzes data, monitors budgets and costs, recommends equipment selections, performs feasibility studies, and provides BAS commissioning and mechanical systems technical expertise in the assigned program areas; participates in strategic planning or efficiency initiatives, assuring quality, setting policy or procedures, and record keeping, all while performing within University or departmental policies; supervises assigned employees, which includes planning, prioritizing, and scheduling work tasks or action plans, leading teams, resolving problems, providing training, and assuring all aspects of a safe work environment for assigned employees and customers.

Representative Duties

  • Initiate, develop and evaluate options for feasibility studies, analyses, projects, or processes; recommend or direct solutions as appropriate
  • Contribute in the development of projects and processes in support of the overall strategic plan; perform investigations; develop action plans and establish priorities
  • Develop and prepare project and support documents for customer use; review, approve, and implement Sequences of Operation; demonstrate proficient knowledge of integration practices
  • Develop and complete project work; provide assistance, direction, and training to staff, technical personnel, contractors, and consultants
  • Participate in energy saving efforts through the use of BAS; provide guidance to contractors and consultants on best practices for installation and operation of building automation systems
  • Assist with Project Management duties such as considering the customer’s needs, defining project requirements and approach, estimating projects, and keeping projects on track
  • Provide proficient level support for technical personnel by troubleshooting, analyzing, and modifying the software code as required
  • Identify and participate in initiatives to improve operational efficiencies and work quality; complete project close out procedures
  • Assist in developing and setting unit policies
  • May supervise staff members, including hiring, development, and performance management

Base Description:
– Supervises direct reports, but primarily completes activities, tasks, and/or projects of a functional nature.
Level Summary:
– Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge to perform own work; spends majority of time on tasks related to own job responsibilities. May demonstrate subject matter expertise. Demonstrates intermediate to advanced planning, organizing, directing, and facilitating skills. Demonstrates the ability to coach assigned employees. Assigns and reviews completed work to verify accuracy, quality, and adherence to professional standards. Trains, coaches, mentors, and motivates staff. Supervisory Responsibilities:
– Typically oversees at least 2 full–time direct reports or equivalent team of part–time and/or student workers (for Professional track, performs work at the Senior Professional level or higher)
Fiscal Responsibilities:
– May validate and pay invoices
– Monitors and tracks budgets for specific area and/or grant(s)
– May assist in planning and forecasting budgets

  • Comp Grade – 11
  • Minimum – $68,200.00
  • MidPoint – $85,200.00
  • Maximum – $102,300.00
