Job Summary and Representative Duties

The Automotive Services Supervisor is responsible for directing and overseeing daily fleet maintenance and repair operations to ensure University vehicles are safe, reliable, compliant, and available to support operational needs; supervises technical staff engaged in vehicle inspection, maintenance, and repair activities; establishes work priorities and schedules; provides technical expertise and operational guidance; administers vehicle lifecycle and maintenance programs; monitors budgets and inventories; ensures compliance with safety regulations, University policies, and collective bargaining agreements.

  • Ensure fleet maintenance and repair operations are conducted safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established quality standards
  • Hire, train, mentor, evaluate, and supervise employees engaged in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of University-owned vehicles
  • Establish work priorities; schedule, assign, and monitor preventive maintenance, diagnostic, and repair activities to ensure timely completion and customer satisfaction
  • Review work quality and ensure compliance with vehicle maintenance standards, manufacturer specifications, and operational requirements
  • Provide technical expertise, analysis, consultation, and troubleshooting assistance to staff; resolve or escalate operational and customer service issues as appropriate
  • Administer vehicle lifecycle management programs, including preventive maintenance scheduling, repair planning, vehicle replacement recommendations, and fleet modernization initiatives
  • Research and recommend vehicle specifications, emerging automotive technologies, alternative fuel and electric vehicle solutions, and maintenance best practices
  • Evaluate vehicle acquisition, replacement, lease, and disposal options; prepare recommendations and process related requisitions and procurement requests
  • Monitor industry trends, regulatory changes, and technological advancements to improve fleet performance, safety, sustainability, and operational efficiency
  • Recommend and implement operational improvements related to workforce utilization, maintenance processes, materials management, and service delivery
  • Administer assigned operating budgets; analyze operational and financial data to identify efficiencies and implement cost-containment measures
  • Develop and maintain relationships with vendors and suppliers to ensure cost-effective procurement of vehicles, parts, materials, and services
  • Monitor inventory levels and ensure the availability of parts, supplies, and materials necessary to support fleet operations
  • Ensure compliance with applicable licensing, inspection, registration, environmental, and regulatory requirements affecting fleet operations
  • Develop, communicate, implement, and enforce work rules, policies, procedures, and operational standards
  • Promote and maintain a safe work environment; conduct safety training, inspections, and corrective actions as needed
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, and vehicle-related safety concerns; prepare reports and implement corrective actions
  • Interpret and administer provisions of applicable collective bargaining agreements; participate in grievance procedures and labor-management activities
  • Maintain accurate vehicle maintenance records, operational reports, performance metrics, and other documentation required to support fleet management objectives

Supervisory Responsibilities:
