Job Summary

The Lab Coordinator – Animal Sciences is responsible for daily laboratory services and operations including ensuring equipment and instrumentation is are maintained; creating/updating/revising procedural manuals and ensuring compliance; training and supervising staff; contributing to diagnostic services and research-specific laboratory testing; assisting with developing and reconciling budgets.

Representative Duties

  • Supervise daily laboratory services and operations; schedule equipment and instrumentation preventive maintenance, calibration, repairs; secure service contracts; develop/revise procedural manuals; train staff; ensure compliance with proper laboratory practices and procedures
  • Contribute to diagnostic services and research-specific laboratory testing; coordinate with investigators and research staff; perform quantitative and qualitative chemical, hematological, microbiological, and microscopic analysis on various animal specimens; refine and adapt testing methodologies as necessary
  • Prepare specimens for offsite testing including specimen submission, result compilation, and billing reconciliation
  • Coordinate laboratory diagnostics phase of sentinel animal program
  • Assist with developing, monitoring, and reconciling operational budgets; identify cost containment measures and maximize revenue sources; secure competitive pricing; develop fee structures; resolve monthly billing; compile monthly reports
  • Maintain awareness of animal science laboratory industry trends and regulatory requirements; update SOPs, guidelines, manuals, policies, and procedures; conduct training; enforce compliance; participate in compliance reviews; take correction action as required
  • Hire, train, coach, supervise, and evaluate employees; prepare schedules; communicate and enforce standards; promote professional development; adhere to Collective Bargaining Agreement; participate in grievance and arbitration hearings
  • Monitor laboratory environmental sustainability programs including recycling, conservation, or waste management

Level Summary:

Supervisory Responsibilities:
– Typically oversees at least 2 full–time direct reports or equivalent team of part–time and/or student workers (for Support track, performs work at Senior Support level or higher; for Professional track, performs work at the Advanced Professional level or higher)

– May validate and pay invoices
– May monitor/track budgets for specific area and/or grant(s)

Salary Structure
  • Comp Grade – 9
  • Minimum – $56,200.00
  • MidPoint – $68,800.00
  • Maximum – $81,500.00
