Job Summary

The Scientific Safety Officer, through collaboration with researchers, faculty, staff, and students, etc., monitors the safe use, handling, storage, containment, and disposal of biological, chemical, radiological, and physical materials, agents, waste, etc. Responsibilities include laboratory and facility inspections; investigating and responding to incidents and concerns; liaising with government agencies and institutional committees; conducting training; creating and updating guidelines, polices, and procedures.

Representative Duties

  • Monitor the safe use, handling, storage, containment, and disposal of biological, chemical, radiological, and physical hazards
  • Conduct laboratory and facility inspections; identify and remediate issues; investigate incidents and complaints; provide corrective action, prepare reports, and monitor compliance
  • Collaborate with investigators, research teams, faculty, administrators, staff, and students to meet institutional and regulatory compliance obligations; liaise with government agencies and institutional committees
  • Conduct risk assessments to identify potential hazards and recommend mitigation strategies
  • Stay abreast of statutory and regulatory requirements; create, update, and implement policies, procedures, guideline and protocols; disseminate information to relevant parties; conduct training

Supervisory Responsibilities:
– Indirect supervisor for other full–time employees
– May serve as direct supervisor for part–time, student, and/or temporary workers, volunteers, or a full–time employee

– May validate and pay invoices
– Monitors and tracks budgets and funding

  • Minimum – $86,300.00
  • MidPoint – $107,900.00
  • Maximum – $129,500.00
