Job Summary

Automotive Services and Specialized Equipment Supervisors ensure service garage operations are safe, reliable, and efficient. Supervisor responsibilities include hiring, training, evaluating, developing, and supervising personnel; prioritizing and scheduling work; providing technical expertise; administering life-cycle programs; keeping abreast of industry trends; administering budgets, monitoring inventories, and processing requisitions; adhering to and enforcing policy, regulatory, and bargaining unit requirements.

Representative Duties

  • Ensure service garage operations are safe, reliable, and efficient
  • Hire, train, evaluate, develop, and supervise personnel engaged in repairing and maintaining University owned vehicles and specialized equipment; establish work sequence; prioritize, schedule, and assign work; ensure job specification compliance and customer satisfaction
  • Provide technical expertise, analysis, consultation; discuss, resolve, refer, and report issues
  • Administer life-cycle programs including equipment maintenance, repair, renovation, and modernization; research and provide new equipment specifications; assess purchase and lease options; recommend and process requisitions
  • Keep abreast of industry trends; evaluate, recommend, and implement organizational changes including workforce, materials, equipment
  • Administer work unit budget; study data to determine efficient and cost-effective ways to manage operations; implement cost containment measures; develop and cultivate select supply sources; identify new and maximize existing revenue sources; monitor inventory
  • Monitor regulatory requirements including licensing, certifications, and training; recommend or make work rules, polices, procedures; communicate, enforce, and ensure compliance
  • Ensure a safe work environment; participate in emergency planning and response; investigate accidents and prepare reports
  • Follow Collective Bargaining Agreement; participate in grievance procedures, hearings, and arbitrations

Base Description:
– Supervises direct reports, but primarily completes activities, tasks, and/or projects of a functional nature.
Level Summary:
– Demonstrates appropriate knowledge to perform own work; spends majority of time on tasks related to own job responsibilities. Demonstrates baseline planning, organizing, directing, and facilitating skills. Reviews completed work of others to verify accuracy and quality. Follows recommended approaches to assigned work. Supervises assigned staff and coordinates routine work activities. Monitors employee interactions and facilitates a productive working environment. Communicates instructions and policies in a consistent, effective and timely manner. Identifies and addresses concerns appropriately. Makes recommendations for possible solutions.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
– Typically oversees at least 2 full–time direct reports or equivalent team of part–time and/or student workers (for Support track, performs work at Senior Support level or higher; for Professional track, performs work at the Advanced Professional level or higher)
Fiscal Responsibilities:
– May validate and pay invoices
– May monitor/track budgets for specific area and/or grant(s)
Problem Solving:
– Encounters generally routine problems with progressively more complex and/or varied problems
– Typically follows standard operating procedures to resolve problems
– May apply specialized knowledge and skills to resolve complex and/or varied problems
– Applies proven and tries new approaches when solving problems

– Works with minimal supervision on difficult work assignments, conferring with manager on unusual matters

Salary Structure
  • Comp Grade – 10
  • Minimum – $61,800.00
  • MidPoint – $75,700.00
  • Maximum – $89,600.00
