Job Summary

Utilities Services Supervisors hire, train, evaluate, develop, and supervise personnel engaged in maintaining utility services, plants, and distribution systems. Supervisory responsibilities include prioritizing and scheduling work assignments; establishing work sequence; monitoring plant and infrastructure maintenance and repair; coordinating shutdowns; coordinating with outside vendors, contractors, subcontractors; providing technical expertise and consultation; administering budgets; monitoring inventories; adhering to and enforcing policy, regulatory, and bargaining unit requirements.

Representative Duties

  • Hire, train, evaluate, develop, and supervise staff and technical service employees engaged in maintaining utility services, plants, and distribution systems including electricity, steam, natural gas, compressed air, chilled water, potable water, wastewater, and stormwater, etc.
  • Establish work sequence; prioritize, schedule, and assign work
  • Monitor plant, infrastructure, and equipment maintenance and repair; coordinate utility shutdowns
  • Conduct site visits and safety audits; ensure regulation and job specification compliance; discuss, resolve, refer, and report issues
  • Confer/coordinate with vendors, contractors, faculty, researchers, engineers, project managers and coordinators; provide technical expertise/consultation, analyze problems and recommend/implement solutions
  • Administer budgets and monitor inventory; identify cost containment measures; research, recommend, and order equipment/materials
  • Communicate, enforce, and make recommendations for work rules, policies, and procedures
  • Ensure a safe work environment; participate in emergency planning and response; investigate accidents and prepare reports
  • Follow Collective Bargaining Agreement; participate in grievance procedures, hearings, and arbitrations

Base Description:
– Supervises direct reports, but primarily completes activities, tasks, and/or projects of a functional nature.
Level Summary:
– Demonstrates appropriate knowledge to perform own work; spends majority of time on tasks related to own job responsibilities. Demonstrates baseline planning, organizing, directing, and facilitating skills. Reviews completed work of others to verify accuracy and quality. Follows recommended approaches to assigned work. Supervises assigned staff and coordinates routine work activities. Monitors employee interactions and facilitates a productive working environment. Communicates instructions and policies in a consistent, effective and timely manner. Identifies and addresses concerns appropriately. Makes recommendations for possible solutions.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
– Typically oversees at least 2 full–time direct reports or equivalent team of part–time and/or student workers (for Support track, performs work at Senior Support level or higher; for Professional track, performs work at the Advanced Professional level or higher)
Fiscal Responsibilities:
– May validate and pay invoices
– May monitor/track budgets for specific area and/or grant(s)
Problem Solving:
– Encounters generally routine problems with progressively more complex and/or varied problems
– Typically follows standard operating procedures to resolve problems
– May apply specialized knowledge and skills to resolve complex and/or varied problems
– Applies proven and tries new approaches when solving problems

– Works with minimal supervision on difficult work assignments, conferring with manager on unusual matters

Salary Structure
  • Comp Grade – 10
  • Minimum – $61,800.00
  • MidPoint – $75,700.00
  • Maximum – $89,600.00
