Job Summary and Representative Duties

Editors review, edit, and re-write a variety of documents and content for publications; ensure that all documents meet required and accepted format and content standards; evaluate content for clarity, accuracy, and consistency.

  • Proofread copy to detect and correct errors in spelling, punctuation, and syntax
  • Read, evaluate, and edit manuscripts or other materials submitted for publication, and confer with authors regarding changes in content, style, and organization
  • Develop story or content ideas, considering identified target audience
  • Prepare, rewrite, and edit copy to improve readability and accessibility (if applicable)
  • Oversee publication production, including artwork, layout, typesetting, and printing, ensuring adherence to deadlines and budget requirements
  • Plan the contents of publications according to the publication's style, editorial policy, and publishing requirements.
  • Allocate print space for story text, photos, and illustrations according to space parameters and copy significance
  • Make manuscript acceptance or revision recommendations to the publisher
  • Arrange for copyright permissions
  • May write text, such as stories, articles, editorials, or newsletters
  • May supervise staff members, including hiring, development, and performance management
