Job Summary and Representative Duties
The Occupational Safety Manager is responsible for overseeing comprehensive workplace safety programs to ensure a safe environment for employees; leads the work unit's occupational safety efforts by identifying potential hazards, conducting safety audits, ensuring adherence to local, state, and federal regulations, and fostering a culture of safety excellence; oversees incident investigations, regulatory reporting, and continuous improvement of safety performance; serves as a liaison for the work unit to the Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS).
- Lead the Occupational Safety team, including hiring, developing, and conducting performance management for staff
- Provide strategic direction and day-to-day oversight of safety personnel and programs
- Manage the departmental budget and allocate resources effectively to support safety initiatives
- Oversee the development and maintenance of the work unit's safety plan, focusing on hazard recognition, evaluation, control, and the protection of employees
- Develop, implement, and manage occupational safety policies and programs for a work unit aligned with regulatory requirements and industry best practices, in collaboration with EHS
- Establish and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure safety performance and drive continuous improvement
- Ensure compliance with all applicable University, local, state, and federal safety regulations and standards
- Stay current with evolving safety legislation, regulations, and industry trends to maintain compliance
- Conduct regular workplace inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify hazards and ensure adherence to safety standards
- Oversee ergonomic evaluations and collaborate in emergency response planning
- Develop and oversee employee safety training programs to ensure awareness of policies, procedures, and organizational safety goals
- Promote a culture of safety by keeping employees informed of the unit's safety objectives
- Lead investigations of workplace incidents, injuries, and near misses; perform root cause and failure analyses and implement corrective and preventive actions
- Develop, implement, and manage injury and illness prevention programs
- Advise unit leadership on safety program effectiveness, risk exposure, and injury prevention strategies
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Human Resources and EHS to address safety concerns and improve overall safety performance

- MidPoint – $128,688.00
