Job Summary and Representative Duties

The Medical Technologist - Pathology is responsible for proper collection, precise testing, and accurate reporting of clinical laboratory specimens. In addition, the Technologist provides consultation to clinicians regarding laboratory analysis and interpretation of results.

  • Conduct laboratory testing and analysis on medical specimens
  • Collect and process specimens, ensure that specimens meet the standards for quality testing
  • Perform testing and review accuracy and reliability of results before reporting to a clinician; alerts clinicians of abnormal and critical values
  • Responsible for problem identification and resolution with regards to specimen quality, laboratory equipment operation and laboratory information systems
  • Oversee quality control; perform proficiency testing and participate in various department continuous quality improvement initiatives
  • Perform instrument maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting
  • Maintain professional proficiency and competency in the areas of phlebotomy, hematology, urinalysis, chemistry, microbiology, immunology/serology and microscopy
  • May provide guidance and oversight to staff performing phlebotomy
