Job Summary and Representative Duties

The Academic Advising Manager oversees the design, development, implementation, and assessment of an advising program within an assigned area; directs a comprehensive advising program that promotes student success, retention, and equity; ensures program alignment with University academic values, objectives, and policies; equips students to make well-informed decisions that advance their academic goals; collaborates closely with faculty, leadership, and staff to ensure consistent advising practices; provides leadership for advising staff.

  • Establish, direct, and evaluate the academic advising program for an assigned college or unit; develop a responsive, proactive advising structure; ensure the delivery of an advising program that utilizes innovative, evidence-based, best practices; oversee the implementation of advising technologies to improve program efficacy
  • Direct all assessment activities for an advising program; develop, analyze, and report on performance goals; recommend changes to improve student outcomes and advising performance
  • Serve as a liaison with the Division of Undergraduate Studies, college leadership, and commonwealth campuses; facilitate cross-unit collaboration between all groups including program coordinators, college staff and faculty, and student-facing departments, in order to advocate for and promote student outcomes
  • Develop strategies to help students access resources, opportunities, and services that promote engagement and student success
  • Monitor compliance with accreditation standards, state and federal regulations, and University requirements related to advising and student services
  • Interpret and apply academic policies; assess the impact of policy changes on the advising program; develop procedures that align with University policies and standards
  • Lead change management efforts related to advising redesign, policy updates, technology implementations, and organizational restructuring
  • Administer testing, consulting, advising and related programs/services for designated student populations; may be responsible for provisional enrollment programs
  • Direct academic advising training and development for faculty and professional advisers; disseminate changes in program curricula, policies, procedures, and other academic information
  • Administer the academic advising budget; forecast staffing and program resource requirements; exercise established expenditure authorization; develop and present financial reports; may delegate responsibility for developing budgets to lower-level management
  • Serve on college, campus, and University wide committees related to curriculum, student success, advising policy, enrollment planning, and academic standards
  • May teach in accordance with academic unit/campus policies
  • Supervise, hire, mentor, evaluate, and train staff, students, and volunteers
