Job Summary and Representative Duties

The Athletic Trainer provides comprehensive athletic training services to physically active individuals within the University in accordance with the Pennsylvania Practice Act and under the direction of a licensed physician; focuses on optimizing student-athlete health, safety, and performance through injury prevention, clinical evaluation, emergency care, treatment, and rehabilitation; works collaboratively with team physicians and athletic department staff to deliver evidence-based care and contributes to an environment that supports the physical and mental well-being of student-athletes.

  • Provide athletic training services including prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses within the scope of professional preparation and certification
  • Deliver emergency care and first response for athletic-related injuries and medical conditions
  • Collaborate with team physicians to prevent, diagnose, and treat emergency, acute, and chronic conditions
  • Determine appropriate treatment and rehabilitation plans and evaluate student-athlete readiness for participation, including pre-participation clearance and post-injury/illness return-to-play decisions
  • Provide athletic training coverage for practices, competitions, and strength and conditioning sessions
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive injury prevention and performance enhancement programs
  • Assist in the organization and ongoing review of programs designed to optimize athletic performance and reduce injury risk
  • Maintain accurate and compliant medical records and documentation
  • Coordinate and schedule healthcare appointments and referrals
  • Oversee and coordinate student-athlete entrance and exit physical examinations
  • Ensure effective communication and collaboration with physicians, healthcare providers, and athletic staff
  • Serve as an educational resource on sports medicine and athletic training for coaches, staff, and affiliated personnel
  • Research current treatment methods and integrate evidence-based practices into care
  • Maintain required certifications and participate in continuing education
  • Assist in the education and supervision of Graduate Student Athletic Trainers
  • Promote a healthy and safe environment for all student-athletes
  • May supervise staff members, including hiring, development, and performance management
